A Day in the Life of Me

Post 1
I usually wake up to the chorus of Living On a Prayer by Bon Jovi, I'm not the kind of person to put an annoying alarm to wake up to because waking up to something annoying will put me in a cranky mood, so instead, I put my phone to play to something loud but still enjoyable. To be honest though, my roommate probably hates it. I'm a college student living in New York City and on most days I have class at nine a.m. but she doesn't usually have to wake up until at least noon... besides our inconvenient schedules though, we get along pretty well, and how could we not? How can two people that love The Beatles and The Red Hot Chili Peppers equally not get along? I don't think it's possible at all.
Throughout my usually hectic but fun day, I always make it a point to call my mom at least once to have a "nice talk" with her, otherwise she will call me, bbm me, and/or text me, until I call her back and we spend at least 30 minutes on the phone, but as bad as that may seem to most college students I don't mind at all, she is the cheese to my macaroni, and she is definitely what I miss most about Miami. After my mom, the rest of my family is the most important thing in my life... We are very close and we were all raised to put family above anything. After them comes my yellow Beatle, which always makes me miss sunny Miami, Florida, but the truth is I love this city it is full of life like no other, and that thought always makes me want to stay here for a long time. I love the history, fashion, food, and everything else that it has to offer. I am without a doubt a foodie and this city definitely fulfills my needs and cravings for all sorts of cuisines that I could want... As for fashion and shopping, Bloomingdale's is my best friend but in this amazing city small boutiques vintage shops are always tempting and dangerous to stop by. Before i came to New York my style was different, i would always wear t-shirts, shorts and flip flops or sneakers all year round, but this isn't Miami, and here in the city my Ugg boots have become my best friends, as a matter of fact I have been tempted to buy all cozy Ugg merchandise that I have seen since I've been here because the climate is a bit colder than in Miami, to say the least.
I love going back home and spending time with my family and friends and going out to eat because that is one of my favorite things to do... My guiltiest pleasure are M&M's when it come to candy, that is about the one thing i could never have enough of along with french fries, specially if they are McDonald french fries or Checkers's fully loaded fries. I try not to give in and eat that kind of stuff often but sometimes, I just can't help it.
I try to eat healthy on a daily basis and I also try to stay active by doing yoga about four times a week if not more. I know that most people, especially young people tend to have a distorted perception of what it is to be healthy, but i honestly do not believe that i belong in this category; by healthy I mean that when I cook I never use the stove and when I'm heating up food I do not use it unless it is an emergency, I'm also conscious of the amounts of not only fats and sugars in the products I eat, but also in the amount of sodium and preservatives because that is equally important if not more than the grams of trans-fat in piece of bacon or a cone of ice cream.
I'm a very laid back kind of person and on most days all I wear is one of my 15 rock n' roll band t-shirts and jeans (or shorts if I'm in Miami) or my Dolphins jersey if it is a game day, yes I love football, and baseball, and soccer, and almost all other sports out there. Playing sports with my friends and doing yoga are probably my favorite things to do, when we didn't have school back home, we would always have sports days and even though we are all friends it always got competitive. We would also have beach days starting the first week of March, but to be honest, even though I'm from Miami I'm not really a beach person, sure I always end up having a good time whenever I go, but it is never my plan to go to the beach it is crowed with tourists, and there is never parking, and if you are lucky enough to find parking its always very expensive too, and I'm usually picked as a driver so I always have to deal with that inconvenience. I hate the fact that touristy places always have over priced public parking, what if you are not a tourist? What, if like me, you are a resident of a beautiful and attractive city? It sucks that we have to pay for public parking alone if you already pay taxes for that city, but it sucks even more to have to pay an unfair price.
To talk about the things I think are really wrong would take quite a while, but what bothers me most can be summed up in a couple of words that although I have heard and read a couple of times I do not know exactly who they belong to: "I love how modern intellectuals think they can understand and really know an individual based on said individual's current status, class, situation, or set of beliefs and deem them a lesser human being. Screw you and your elitist mindset, you egotistical, self proclaimed "rebel" douche-bag." That is about it, elitist people that are always trying to put down the rest because no one has the right to say that they are better than anyone else based on already said circumstances.

For me the one thing I absolutely love and can not live without is music, all sorts of music, all genres. My favorite type of music is classic rock, there is nothing like it, most of my concerts have been classic rock concerts and those have definitely been the best ones. I have seen everyone from AC/DC and Journey to Bon Jovi and Guns and Roses... I love the movies and going to concerts, and comedy shows i think they are a lot of fun specially when you are out with a big group of people. My favorite kind of movies and tv shows are funny ones, except for House, which is my favorite next to Friends. I have never watched an episode of Friends that hasn't made me laugh, the same thing goes for That's 70s Show, they are both so funny and I always try to catch the reruns both of them. sometimes I even watch them online on my Blackberry, which in my opinion the greatest and most useful phone out there and there is nothing like it, but yes whenever I'm bored somewhere in public I either watch that or funny animal videos on youtube or the South Park songs... those are really funny. Shrek is definitely my favorite funny movie, it is the one movie that I can watch over and over and not be tired and still laugh like the first time saw it. I also like monster's inc. and the incredibles. I like cartoon movies a lot because they have an innocent sense of humor and it goes to show that things can still be funny without having to be perverted and that movies can be enjoyable to adults without having to be sexual.

When I was younger I used to think my loud Colombian family was embarrassing, but now I actually embrace all the things that they do and appreciate my culture very much. I do consider myself Colombian and Hispanic, and I am very proud of it. Colombian culture is for the most part very happy culture, specially from the city that me and my family are from. In the city of Cali, people love music and dancing and there are always festivals that take part throughout different parts of the city and they all include drinking, eating, and dancing. The most popular type of music in that city is salsa, and having a family that grew up in that city, not learning how to dance salsa was not an option. All of my generation, and the ones before me and after, know how to dance salsa because it is something that is a very important part of my family and who we are, there fore it is very important for us to pass it down.
The biggest advantage of having a Colombian/Hispanic background is that I now can speak two languages fluently and in the competitive society that we live in, I think that is a very important trait, also I'm very proud of my values and independent character that I have all because that is the way that my mom raised me and her mom raised her, in general most Colombian women have the same type of strong and determined character. Another important plus for me is the food, I love all types of food but especially Colombian, mainly because it is very focused on natural and fresh products, not necessarily slimming but most things are made from scratch so it is healthier.
The biggest challenge I face being Colombian is the stereotype that most people have internationally about Colombian people, which is that of Colombian people being drug dealers/users, and it is a complete misconception because it is simply not true. Because of my culture and the way that I was brought up I do not necessarily feel that I have more responsibilities than my other friends that are not Colombian/Hispanic, but I do feel that family for me plays a bigger role in my life than it does in the life of other people that are not Hispanic, I find that Hispanic people just have a bigger sense of family but since, personally, it is something I enjoy I do not see it as a responsibility or a burden to make sure I stay in touch with them now that I'm away from home.

For the most part, I am a quiet person and it wasn't until a few years ago that I felt very awkward in public situations, especially when I had to talk to strangers or confront them; I felt very uneasy to the point that I couln"t even call the cable company to complaint about the service or errors on the bill, which I often had to do for my mother. Now the story is very different, although I am still quiet, I have gotten over my fear of talking to people that I don't know. My public speaking skills were not only developed by all the uncomfortable phone calls that I had to make for my mother but also when I started working and dealing with bosses and clients. My most comfortable moments are when I'm with my family, there is nothing like being with the ones you love and you know they love you back and accept you for who you are. My family is very close and we are all very thankful that we can always count on each other.

I have always moved around a lot but since I moved to Miami I have had the same group of people who I'm still very close to eventhough I moved away for college. I do consider myself a good friend to them and to all of the people that I have met since I homed here to New York. My friends back home all know that I would, and I have, gone above and beyond for them like I know that they would all do for me. We have gone beyond being friend and have become like a very close family. If I had to say goodbye to someone that I could not see myself living without the only thing that I could be able to say for certain is that it would be a very emotional but the time that I would have to spend with them before parting would definitely be something that we both enjoy doing together. For example if this person was to be my best friend then we would spend all our time together and money on rock concerts because those ore some of the best memories that we have together.
